The Transforming Seattle's 520 Floating Bridge 2012 International Design Ideas Competition is challenging the design and art communities to envision new, innovative reuse strategies. The 520 bridge will be decommissioned in 2014 due to high maintenance costs, damage, and the need for additional lanes. The Washington State Department of Transportation is requiring of the new bridge's design-build team that it be reused or recycled in a sustainable fashion; current trends for the reuse of pontoons have been floating docks, breakwaters and piers, but what else could be done with such a feat of engineering?

Infrastructure reuse has recently made headlines in architecture. Some examples include the High Line in New York, which converted a raised railroad track into a linear park; Kraanspoor in Amsterdam, a project which built an office complex atop a concrete shipyard craneway; and the current debate on New York's Tappan Zee Bridge, which many are hoping to see reused as a park. The design community has begun to step up and take on challenges of large scale; this competition seeks to push that innovation one step further.

The Transforming Seattle's 520 Floating Bridge 2012 International Design Ideas Competition seeks design proposals which either utilize the bridge in its current state or take the bridge apart and reuse its pontoons at a new site on Lake Washington, Lake Union or in the Puget Sound in Washington State. Designers need to constantly assert the need for advancement in creative reuse; our ideas drive design forward. What is a floating bridge when its function is no longer needed? What can designers do when faced with the design problem of reusing thirty-three floating concrete pontoons?

The La Spezia Arsenal 2062 Competition is launched by two associations: Wenext (www.wenext.org) and Murati Vivi di Marola (murativivimarola.blogspot.it), during the Florence Liquid.Lab Festival from 9 to 12 of May 2012. Competition is to receive from participants an idea about reusing the area of Italian Arsenal of La Spezia. All the submitted proposals will be showed in an exhibition during the last session of Liquidlab Festival in Florence from 18 to 21 October.

Theme s request is a renovation project for Maritime Arsenal, assuming a future scenario in which a really important and strategic military zone could be merged with the urban center.
Every way of expressing the idea of the project is accepted, as long as it follows the rules of submission explained later. Ways of representing the project are free as well as no specific scale drawing is required.
Written and graphic documents about the site are not a required base for the project.

Concept
The Project Space Series 2012 'ACTIVATING URBAN VOIDS' brings up the topic of activating urban voids in European cities and discusses possible approaches. The design of our cities is one of the biggest and most pressing fields of activity, particularly for the young European architects and planners.

Our cities have many forgotten voids that can be filled with citizens' activities
How can this be included in Urban Planning processes?

The Project Space Series 2012 will therefore explore how new urban strategies can be initiated by architects and urban planners, involving inhabitants, non-governmental organisations, private investors and local politicians.

Approach
The Project Space 'ACTIVATING URBAN VOIDS' wants to look into how young architects and urban planners can contribute to the ongoing discussion of public participation, especially when concerning the discarded spaces in the urban realm.

The exchange of experiences and different points of view from different European countries concerning similar urban situations, social structures and political conditions, will be the base for discussions and a series of events in 2012.

Implementation
The project space series 'ACTIVATING URBAN VOIDS' are being developed with the support of local wonderland teams and can be seen as a laboratory developing ideas, testing experimental strategies, implementing new methods, discussing alternative planning instruments and presenting future-orientated solutions and visions.
The 2-3 winning teams will have the opportunity to work for three days in the Project Space City and will have:


Lectures: Open lectures by wonderland teams and experts from the field of architecture, urban planning, design, arts, administration, politics and other relevant areas.

Workshops: Creative workshops of several days duration about concrete urban situations and planning area s in order to develop new strategies, involving local occupants and regional institutions.

City tours: guided visit of the city with local experts (administration, architects, planners and citizens)

Events: the teams will be involved in the creation of an urban event to activate the project site

Documentation and presentations: As a summary of each project space small handbooks, that document the results and the developed ideas, should be compiled.

Recently, New York’s state government has been trying to legalize non-Indian casinos throughout the state. Current proposals are asking for the construction of seven “Vegas”-sized casinos throughout New York. Although lawmakers have pushed to keep the casinos out of New York City, this ideas competition aims to investigate what a casino would do to New York City and, likewise, what New York City would do to a casino. The New York casinos are being pitched by their supporters as “regional revitalization” tools. Although Manhattan is arguably in no need of revitalization, it does have one clear zone that could use rethinking—Hudson Yards and the area around its neighboring convention center. The existing Jacob Javits Center remains an isolated structure surrounded by a no-man’s-land of parking and train tracks. Cut off from restaurants, hotels, and entertainment, it is hardly an inviting location for a large convention, nor does it allow for or engender connection to the city at-large. You might as well have your convention in Secaucus. There is talk of relocating the Center to Queens, to be sited next to the recently opened “racino” at Aqueduct Racetrack—a major financial success thus far, and example of the excitement people in the five boroughs have for gambling. The proposed convention center would be the largest in the United States. This competition asks entrants to leave the convention center at its current location on Manhattan’s West Side, but replace it and add a hotel and casino to the complex. Entrants are asked to rethink this zone so as to create a dynamic destination in the city for tourists, residents, and convention-goers alike. At the same time, the complex should become a draw for non convention-goers. If a Vegas-style themed casino clearly wouldn’t work in New York City, then what would bring New Yorkers out to gamble? Is it a family focused zone for tourists or an adults-only retreat? The proposed building should incorporate state-of-the-art facilities for both modern gambling and high-tech conventions. The convention center should be unique while remaining flexible, and the casino should shake off both cheesy Vegas aethetics and the dry desperation of Atlantic City to strive for something architecturally rich and complex—while simultaneously entertaining. The complex should also find a way to reconnect to Manhattan’s nearby entertainment districts. Madison Square Garden, Times Square, and the High Line seem cut off, despite their proximity. This complex should aim to recharge its surroundings in the same way the High Line did the Meatpacking District, bringing in pedestrians and cleaning up the area. On the western, waters edge of Manhattan, the site also includes a large pier that can be used for a portion of the program or turned into outdoor parks and recreation areas. The site includes the land the current convention center lies on, the space over the West Side Yard train yard, and the aforementioned waterfront pier. The West Side Yard was designed to accommodate an overbuild in its air rights, and space was left between the tracks for columns to support a platform above the tracks. The history of proposals for the very same site includes the ongoing Hudson Yards Redevelopment and the IFCCA “Competition for Manhattan’s West Side.”

Home International Open Design Competition
for a $30,000 Single Occupancy Home Within An Urban Area of A Developed Country

Our open design competition seeks to find well designed homes for the elderly or homeless within some of the World’s richest countries. The growing rate in single occupancy households has led to increased numbers of young and elderly people affected by poverty being forced to live in substandard living conditions & in the worst cases sleeping rough. We are asking designers, engineers, architects and house builders to provide a solution to the housing crisis by offering sustainable, affordable small homes that give those that are alienated or marginalised within society a safe place to live. We ask contestants to site their proposals in an urban area of a developed country, develop single occupant designs that are sensitive to the local context and keep to a budget of £20,000 ($30,000). Building Trust international will work with local government and community groups to seek funding and planning for the winning design. The design competition has the support of Habitat for Humanity and the YMCA.

ADC Young Guns is the only global, cross-disciplinary portfolio competition that identifies today's vanguard of young creative professionals, age 30 and under.

WHO CAN ENTER?

Entrants must be professionals working in the field(s) of graphic design, photography, illustration, advertising, art direction, environmental design, film, animation, motion graphics, interactive design, typography, architecture, copywriting, product design, package design, product design, fashion design, furniture design, interior design, sound design or industrial design. If your work does not fit within any of these categories, this does not necessarily mean that it isn't eligible - email info@adcyoungguns.org to make sure.

Entrants must be 30 years of age or younger on the day entries open (March 13, 2012) and must have been working professionally for at least 2 years (both full-time and freelance work qualify). We will require a proof of age in the form of a Passport, State ID or drivers license from all entrants.

If you are a student with two years of the working life under your belt, you are also eligible to enter. Previous ADC Young Guns entrants ARE eligible to enter, but past ADC Young Guns winners are NOT eligible to enter subsequent cycles of the competition.

ADC Young Guns is an international competition open to all who qualify.


SUBMIT:

6-10 pieces of professional and personal work. A maximum of half of your pieces submitted can be personal work. The rest must be professional, published work. Unpublished and client-rejected spec work counts as personal work.

Work entered does not need to have been created in a particular year - entries will be judged as a portfolio of work. Submissions need not conform to any specific media categories. Your submitted portfolio may feature work in one medium or several.

The Congress for the New Urbanism and the City of West Palm Beach are pleased to announce an open design competition, AuthentiCITY, in conjunction with the Congress for the New Urbanism’s 20th annual Congress in West Palm Beach, Florida. Bringing the world’s foremost minds in urban design, planning, architecture, engineering, and policy making together gives us a unique opportunity to give back to the community of West Palm Beach.

This year we’re offering a choice of 2 sites for the competition. We felt that the redevelopment of both sites are key to the health and future of downtown West Palm Beach’s adjacent neighborhoods.

A city does not function alone in a vacuum. Healthy places require a diversity of housing options within and adjacent to their centers. West Palm Beach has the distinct advantage that their in-town neighborhoods have not been segregated from the city center by freeways. However the connection to these neighborhoods and their structure as neighborhoods have decayed.

We challenge entrants to propose realistic and incremental solutions to repair and reconnect West Palm Beach’s in-town neighborhood.

We will be releasing specifics about the competition and registration information within the next two weeks. The deadline for registration and submissions will be April 30th. Competition judging will take place at the CNU event in West Palm Beach where the winning submission will be announced.

As an important part of the Education and Outreach Programs, DVGBC conducts an annual design competition to engage regional colleges and universities and young professionals in the process of sustainable design. The goal is an interactive design competition that will expose participants to sustainable design strategies, USGBC LEED criteria and an integrated design process. The competition aims to encourage the partnership of colleges, universities, design and engineering professionals, and community members in an applied learning experience. It is also targeted toward integration with the Spring college and university curriculum.

$1500 Philadelphia Design Contest Challenge:

The City of Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Department (PPR) currently oversees and operates approximately 160 recreation centers and facilities in the city of Philadelphia. Most of these recreation centers and facilities need repairs and modernization, and on-going maintenance. PPR is working with other departments and partners to make the recreation centers more energy efficient, while providing new programming and activities.

DVGBC has asked Parks & Recreation to identify four sites that meet the following criteria:

* in need of repair/site improvement
* easily accessible via mass-transit
* opportunities for energy efficiency

The challenge this year for the DVGBC Sustainable Design Competition is to re-imagine an existing urban recreation center. Starting with an existing site, teams are asked to use adaptive reuse strategies and analysis to design their vision of what a recreation center can be for the community. Consider emphasizing one of three areas that will be strongly considered during judging:

* Energy efficiency and conservation efforts
* Stormwater management on the site and other sustainable landscaping features
* Community outreach and education programs integrating the site specific connection


$1500 Philadelphia Design Contest Eligibility

The Design Competition is open to all college and university level students as well as emerging professionals (5 years or less of professional design experience, regardless of age). Students and emerging professionals shall be judged and recognized in separate categories. Participants must identify themselves as either a student or young professional.

Our open design competition seeks to find well designed homes for the elderly or homeless within some of the World’s richest countries. The growing rate in single occupancy households has led to increased numbers of young and elderly people affected by poverty being forced to live in substandard living conditions and in the worst cases sleeping rough. We are asking designers, engineers, architects and house builders to provide a solution to the housing crisis by offering sustainable, affordable small homes that give those that are alienated or marginalised within society a safe place to live. We ask contestants to site their proposals in an urban area of a developed country, develop single occupant designs that are sensitive to the local context and keep to a budget of £20,000 ($30,000). Building Trust international will work with local government and community groups to seek funding and planning for the winning design. The design competition has the support of Habitat for Humanity and the YMCA.

Modern Atlanta (MA) is pleased to announce the second annual MA Prize competition. The 2012 MA Prize entries will be carefully selected by a prestigious international jury of practicing designers and scholars and will be displayed at this year's MA12 “Design in Human Week” in Atlanta.

This year the prize calls for designers to submit projects that critically consider today’s notions of sustainability as applied to the modern dwelling. This award aims to highlight projects of all scales, that showcase a critical investigation into sustainable design practices in the home as well as projects that thoughtfully deal with the unique geographical, social, political or cultural Conditions.

All entries will be reviewed by an international jury panel and winners will be announced in May. The first prize winner will be awarded $1000 USD and the second prize winner $500 USD. In addition to the prize winners twelve honorable mentions will be selected.
