Photo Competition, First Place Prize US$500

Photo Competition, First Place Prize US$500

Theme: con•trast

Definition:
1. The act of contrasting; the state of being contrasted.
2. A striking exhibition of unlikeness.

3. The relative difference between light and dark.

The term 'contrast' can mean a lot of things — as always we encourage you to look beyond the obvious, and get creative with how you interpret the theme. We aren't looking for any particular take on it, get creative and don't be afraid to experiment!

We highly encourage you to tell us a bit about your image when you post it. What equipment did you use? What techniques did you use to capture the image? Why does the image speak to you? Share the story behind the image.

Our editorial team will be paying special attention to technical proficiency, artistic merits, creativity in the application of the theme, and the quality and insight of the supporting text. Don't neglect the commentary that you submit along with your image!

Because this is a photography challenge, we are limiting post-processing to things that you can normally accomplish in the darkroom. Tone, brightness and contrast and 'dodge and burn' are all fair game, but composting multiple elements from different images into a single image or painting out elements within the frame is off-limits. Focus on capturing the best image you can in-camera.

Entries begin now. Contest runs through April 30th, 2011.

Limit: one photograph per entry, four entries per person.

Winners will be announced on May 3rd, 2011.

Prizes:
First, second and third place prizes will be awarded by our editorial team — based on overall creativity and artistic merit.

First Place: US$500

Second Place: US$300

Third Place: US$200

All winners will also receive a print piece based on this month's entries and theme, designed by our own Maurice Woods.
