Amateur Photo Competition of the Year 2011

Amateur Photo Competition of the Year 2011

Welcome to Amateur Photographer of the Year 2011 in association with Canon. This week we launch Round one, Shooting trees, where the first-prize winner will receive a fantastic Canon EOS 60D with EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. Whether you are a regular APOY entrant or have never entered before, now is your chance to submit an image and see if you can win one of Canon's flagship cameras.

We're looking for original, imaginative and technically well-executed images that explore the theme in an exciting way. We have included a table outlining the themes for each round, plus the closing dates and the issues in which the results will appear. In the first issue and online every month we will publish a brief explaining the criteria for that round.

Our judges will narrow down the images to a shortlist of 50, and will look again at the images and award points for creativity, technical excellence and how far the image fulfils the brief. The three images with the most points will win the top three prizes for that round. The top 30 highest scoring images will be published in the magazine at the end of the month and the scores from the top 50 finalists will be added to our league table. The names of the top 50 finalists and their points scores will be posted on our website after each round. The person with the most points after the final round will be crowned Amateur Photographer of the Year 2011 and win £5,000 worth of Canon equipment.

‘I Am an Entrepreneur' Photo Competition

‘I Am an Entrepreneur' Photo Competition

The SEVEN Fund is pleased to announce the ‘I Am an Entrepreneur’ photography competition. This competition recognizes the outstanding use of photography to tell compelling stories of role model entrepreneurs from around the world. Anyone globally is welcome to participate in this competition.

Each quarter, ‘I am an Entrepreneur’ features a new theme to inspire photographers and document a different aspect of the entrepreneur’s experience. The theme for April - June 2011 is entrepreneurship and education.

During 2011, the competition will award four (4) prizes, one every three months, over a period of one year. One finalist will be selected every three months, with a winning photograph for the quarter’s theme, and will receive a prize of $250. The grand prize winner (selected from among the 4 finalist photographs) will receive $1,000 at the end of the competition.

Often, the imagery associated with developing nations captures the misery that accompanies poverty. While it is important that these things are taken seriously and are documented, we believe that developing nations also represent tremendous opportunities for hope. The “I am an Entrepreneur” competition strives to reframe the dialogue around solutions to poverty by infusing the world's imagination with new imagery that focuses on entrepreneurship. Our objective with this competition is to gather stunning photographs profiling individual entrepreneurs from around the globe.

Who qualifies to compete in the photo competition?
Anyone may participate in this photo competition. The winning photographers will be required to enter into a contract with SEVEN prior to final awards stating that they hold rights to the image and granting SEVEN a perpetual, worldwide, royalty free license to use the image in connection with the competition. We welcome participants from every field of study, discipline, level and area of professional experience, and geographic region. Submission of the photograph grants SEVEN the right to use the photograph in its media, including but not limited to its website, marketing materials, or upcoming books and films. Any photograph selected to be used in that way would be done so with proper attribution to the photographer, who would also be compensated for that work at market rates.

The maximum file size is 2MB. All photos must be in .jpg format. the exhibition. This means that if your photograph is shortlisted, you will need to supply high quality jpeg images of around 1 megabyte as a minimum. More advanced users should aim to supply image files in 8bit TIFF format, with a filesize between 20-50 mb – this size would enable us to make larger prints if desired. See also rules.

You can still be a winner with a small camera - commended pictures will also be shown in a special online gallery during 2012..

Digital manipulation is allowed. We will ask shortlisted entrants for details of the manipulation used. You are not allowed to claim a subject to be unmanipulated if it has been.

No responsibility can be taken by the organisers for images that are incorrectly submitted.

Types of entry

Single images: These are judged as individual, stand-alone photographs.

Portfolios: A portfolio is a group of photographs that work both as individual images and as part of a themed collection. A portfolio can explore a location, a mood, a colour, a plant group, in fact any garden-related subject that fits into one of the categories - but all the images should relate to one another and to the theme as a whole.

Submissions are now being accepted for Open Here, Hereford Photography Festival’s open exhibition, to take place at The Courtyard Centre for the Arts from 28th October to 26th November 2011. Open Here welcomes submissions from all photographers both nationally and internationally and are keen to support all disciplines of photographic practice.

Photographers may submit up to 5 images, made since January 2010. Images maybe individual works or from a larger series.

Photographers selected for the exhibition will be asked to provide a more detailed proposal for the socially-engaged commission. HPF are committed to developing new photographic work that engages with residents of Herefordshire in addition to supporting photographers to work in the public realm.

Please note that while a desire to work with communities is essential, prior experience of working in this way is not. HPF will fully support the winning photographer to realise the commission and to exhibit the new work as part of the 2012 Festival programme

Deadline of the photography festival: May 31, 2011

Photo Competition - Baby animals

Photo Competition - Baby animals

Spring brings new birth – lambs, baby birds, fox cubs and seal pups, as well as buds and blossoms – both here in the UK and overseas. This month we want to see your images of young wildlife – whether snuggling with mum or playing around. Please only submit photographs with wildlife or nature as the subject.

As last month, simply upload your photos and vote for the ones you like best. Due to the excellent quality of the images we receive, editor Sophie Stafford just can't help herself and will be selecting the winner from the ten images with the highest votes. The winning image will become the icon for April's photo contest. Images may be featured in a newsletter or a future issue.

The editor's choice is final and correspondence will not be entered into.

The final date for submissions of photo competition is 5 May 2011.

The final date for photo competition voting is 1 June 2011.

Don't forget that although you can only upload your images for a month, you can still vote for another month after that and encourage your friends to vote. All votes submitted by the final deadline will count.

Photo Competition, First Place Prize US$500

Photo Competition, First Place Prize US$500

Theme: con•trast

Definition:
1. The act of contrasting; the state of being contrasted.
2. A striking exhibition of unlikeness.

3. The relative difference between light and dark.

The term 'contrast' can mean a lot of things — as always we encourage you to look beyond the obvious, and get creative with how you interpret the theme. We aren't looking for any particular take on it, get creative and don't be afraid to experiment!

We highly encourage you to tell us a bit about your image when you post it. What equipment did you use? What techniques did you use to capture the image? Why does the image speak to you? Share the story behind the image.

Our editorial team will be paying special attention to technical proficiency, artistic merits, creativity in the application of the theme, and the quality and insight of the supporting text. Don't neglect the commentary that you submit along with your image!

Because this is a photography challenge, we are limiting post-processing to things that you can normally accomplish in the darkroom. Tone, brightness and contrast and 'dodge and burn' are all fair game, but composting multiple elements from different images into a single image or painting out elements within the frame is off-limits. Focus on capturing the best image you can in-camera.

Entries begin now. Contest runs through April 30th, 2011.

Limit: one photograph per entry, four entries per person.

Winners will be announced on May 3rd, 2011.

Prizes:
First, second and third place prizes will be awarded by our editorial team — based on overall creativity and artistic merit.

First Place: US$500

Second Place: US$300

Third Place: US$200

All winners will also receive a print piece based on this month's entries and theme, designed by our own Maurice Woods.
