all competition - Under the auspices of Diwan Bookstore, the BA launched a Short Story Contest in both English and Arabic for age groups under 35 and above 35 years old.

Proposed short story should be original, with grammar, spelling and punctuation taken into consideration.

Deadline for sending your pieces is 8 September. Winners will be announced on 15 September 2011.

English Arabic Short Story Contest Rules:

Participants will divided into two age groupings: (a) from 16 - 34 and (b) 35 years and above.

There is no specific theme and the entries may be written in English or Arabic, taking into account the rules of grammar, spelling and punctuation. Font should be Simplified Arabic 14 or Times New Roman 14. Entries should not exceed four pages, typed double-spaced, with 2.5 cm margins. Page numbers should appear on the header. All submissions should be original.

Entries will be accepted from now until September 8th. Four awards are allocated to the two age categories. Certificates of appreciation will also be issued. Results will be announced on September 15th on the website.

As an introduction to our work here at LHCW, we are running a short story competition.

Each story entered will receive a 400 word critique.

The winner will receive £100, a full and comprehensive LHCW critique with suggested markets, an online tutorial and publication on our website.

First runner up will receive a full LHCW critique and publication on our website.

Short Story Writing Contests Submission Guidelines

We’re looking for innovative fiction. Stories that make us sit up and take notice. Give us well-rounded characters, sharp dialogue and an ending that avoids cliché! Stories should be up to 4,000 words – double spaced, in a word document. Entries are judged anonymously so please include a cover sheet with your name, email address, home address and title of story.

At Meridian Writing we run quarterly short story writing Contest and are looking for well written, thoughtfully constructed and entertaining short stories in any genre or theme - the most important elements are that the stories are complete with well-rounded characters, and have a distinctive story arc.

The art of the Short Story is, thankfully, back on a resurgence. For too long it had been considered a poor relative of the novel, but those who know better realize that to construct a well-paced, believable and entertaining story in a comparatively small number of words is an art form in its own right. When one is able to produce excellent stories in a few thousand words it is but a strop on which we can all hone our novel writing abilities.

We are not biased against any genre and welcome hard-core sci-fi as much as historical fiction or a noir thriller - it's the quality of the writing that counts. We all have to start somewhere and we would love to find the next JK, Philip Pullman or Minette Walters.

We suggest that you don't leave entering a contest too close to a deadline, but leave yourself plenty of time to work on a story and never send in your first draft! Write a story, put it away for a while then revise it - you will generally see where improvements can be made straight away. Please pay full attention to our Entry Requirements, as any entries which do not comply will be rejected and no monies returned.
