* Manuscripts may be novels, novellas, memoirs, and works of creative nonfiction, collections of short fiction, creative essays, or a combination of the two.
* All manuscripts must be in a standard 12 point font, reasonably edited for grammar and typographical errors, and sent electronically. We do not accept postal entries. Enough paper is wasted on this planet as it is.
* Judging is blind at all levels. What that means is that the author’s name must not appear anywhere on the manuscript.
* Submissions should be uploaded through our electronic submission manager and incluse the author’s name, mailing address, email address, phone Number, and title of entry in the comments section of the submission form. Judging is blind so it’s very important entrants include all required information in the proper place. No personal information should be included in the manuscript itself.
* Initial judging will be conducted by a network of published writers and editors selected by Grace Notes Books. Finalists will be determined by a staff of editors from Grace Notes Books, NOTES Magazine, and Notesandgracenotes.com. Final judging will be conducted by Grace Notes Book’s primary editors.
* Judge’s feedback and editors notes on entries made by the standard deadline will be sent out at the close of competition.
* Entrants wishing to receive a copy of their judge’s feedback (regardless of finalist status) may do so by paying a small additional fee at the time of submission. Entrants may not do so after making their initial entry.
* Entrants who choose the feedback option before the early bird deadline will receive their reader's notes by June 1st 2012 and will have the opportunity to revise and re-submit the manuscript for ½ the regular entry fee.
* A non-refundable entry fee of $23 must accompany each manuscript. While we wish this were not required, we are a fledgling publishing company chasing a dream (in the middle of a national economic crisis) and an entry fee is a necessary evil. Entry fees will be contributed to prizes, with a percentage being donated to the free bi-monthly competitions hosted at notesandgracenotes.com, publishing costs for the winning title, and marketing for the winning book. In researching the subject of entry fees in similar competitions, we are confident you will find this fee more reasonable than most. There are competitions that charge as much for the entry of a single short story.

* Winning authors are not obligated to accept the publication offered by Grace Notes Books in order to receive their winnings. This is an optional offer.
* The winning entry will receive a publication offer for their manuscript and the option of either a $1000 cash prize or an advance $350 against royalties and a standard publishing contract of 15% of the cover price (retail is generally $12.99 for our trade paperbacks).
* The winning author will receive 5 contributor's copies of their book upon publication. They will also be able to use a discount for additional copies and pay only printing costs.
* All finalists will be considered by Grace Notes Books for future publication and those offers may be made at the end of the competition.
* In the case of a tie, winnings will be divided among entrants but the publishing options will remain the same and both manuscripts will be published.
* All prizes will be paid upon publication of the winning titles. If the winning author turns down the publishing offer, prizes will be paid on the date publication would have taken place.

In the event that the winning author declines the publishing offer:

* Grace Notes Books will select another of the finalist entries for the publication offer.

1. All fiction and nonfiction submissions must be 10,087 words or less, double-spaced, 12 pt. font. Poetry submissions should not exceed five pages or five poems total. Please submit all poems in a single document.

2. All submissions will be read blind. Author's name must not appear on the manuscript.

3. There is a $20 fee per submission. When you click "Pay and Submit" you will be automatically redirected to our billing page, after which you will immediately be able to submit your document.

4. Please, no previously published works or works accepted for publication elsewhere. Simultaneous submissions are okay as long as you notify editors should your piece be accepted elsewhere. Multiple submissions are also permitted, but each submission should be accompanied by the $20 fee.

all competitions #contest #competition - The Nelligan Prize for Short Fiction was established in 2004 in memory of Liza Nelligan, a writer, editor, and friend of many in Colorado State University’s English Department, where she received her master’s degree in literature in 1992. By giving an award to the author of an outstanding short story each year, we hope to honor Nelligan’s life, her passion for writing, and her love of fiction. The Nelligan Prize is offered annually. The winner receives a $2,000 honorarium and the story is published in the fall/winter issue of Colorado Review.

Nelligan Prize for Short Fiction General Guidelines:

1. $2,000 will be awarded for the best short story, which will be published in the fall/winter 2012 issue of Colorado Review.
2. This year’s final judge is Jane Hamilton; friends and students (current & former) of the judge are not eligible to compete, nor are Colorado State University employees, students, or alumni.
3. Entry fee is $15 per story; there is no limit on the number of entries you may submit.
4. Stories must be previously unpublished.
5. There are no theme restrictions, but stories must be under 50 pages.
6. All manuscripts must be typed and double-spaced.
7. Contest opens January 1, 2012.
8. Deadline is the postmark of March 10, 2012.

2012 New South Writing Competition Contest Guidelines:

The 2012 New South Writing Competition will be held from December 1, 2011 through March 5, 2012. (Entries must be received or postmarked by midnight on March 5, 2012). Each year, New South awards $1,000 to a first place winner, and $250 to a second place winner in the genres of poetry and prose. The 2012 New South Writing Contest will be be judged by Tom Hunley in the genre of poetry and Joshua Harmon in the genre of prose.

all competition - We are looking for submissions for a new publication that aims to reach all teachers in South Africa, new and experienced. The aim of the publication is to provide original anecdotes, quotes, short paragraphs as well as photographs/mug shots/illustrations with a focus on inspiring and encouraging teachers. Many teachers are despondent because of various factors influencing teaching in South Africa at the moment and hence this publication aims to provide teachers with a source of hope, motivation and humour to get them through difficult times.

FORMAT FOR SUBMISSIONS:

Written content: Submissions (including quotes, anecdotes and prose) must be one hundred percent your own writing. All writing must demonstrate positivity, inspiration and hope for the teaching profession in South Africa and must be written from a teacher’s perspective (school, university, college, pre-school etc).

Photographs/illustrations: All photographs or illustrations must be one hundred percent your own creative works. Each photograph/illustration must be accompanied by a short caption if there is no written paragraph to accompany this. Mug shots are welcome and may be published alongside your written piece.

Length: All pieces must be a maximum of 300 words (excluding a mug shot). There is a limit of 5 creative pieces per individual. At the end of your submission, please include your full name, the school etc. where you teach and the city/town. Should you wish to remain anonymous, that is fine as well. The Essay Contest is designed and implemented by the American Task Force on the Western Sahara in partnership with outstanding academic institutions who form the Selection Committee

The role of the Selection Committee is to determine the topic and format of the contest and to ensure a fair and transparent process of selecting winners.

October National Essay Competition Selection Criteria

Essays will be assessed for their structure, coherence, creativity, level of documentation, and relevance to the topic. We realize that English might be a foreign language to some participants, and so language mistakes will not penalized, as long as the content is comprehensible. Selection process: the Jury will complete their selections of 8 finalists by the week of December 5. Submissions will be blind-reviewed

Essay finalists will be invited to present their essays to a panel of experts during the Final Jury. The winner(s) will present their work to the participants of SMWS 2012 in Washington, DC.

October National Essay Competition Topic

The issue of the Western Sahara requires more careful examination, and ATFWS is dedicated to promoting more awareness towards the issue. The ATFWS Essay Contest gives you the chance to express your views on the issue of the Moroccan/Western Sahara, whether the Moroccan Autonomy Plan is a viable solution, and what the ramifications of the conflict’s resolution would be. Make sure your essay has a clear and concise thesis statement.

Here are some guiding questions to address:

1) Would the resolution of the Western Sahara conflict make a difference in the North Africa and Middle East region?

2) Discuss the Moroccan Autonomy Plan. How will it help solve the dispute?

3) In what ways would the conflict matter for the United States, the African Union, the European Union, or NATO?

In writing this essay, we encourage you to draw on historical fact, documentation, and personal experience and emphasize your own solutions for a fair and lasting resolution of the conflict.

Who can participate?

The ATFWS Essay Contest is open to all students, as well as non-students from all countries of the world

* "Never increase, beyond what is necessary, the number of entities [or words] required to explain anything." This statement is attributed to William of Ockham in the fourteenth century, and in saying what he did, he had already said too much. Guidelines should be no exception, but they almost always are.

* Tentative publication schedule:
o Dec. 1 - Winter Issue.
o June 1 - Summer issue


* Some writing and photographic art that appears in the print journal will also be published on the website after it appears in print.

o A $1000 featured writer award will be given to the writer of a story selected for publication in each issue as determined by the editors. There is no fee for this award. All stories are eligible.
o Contributors receive two copies of the issue in which their work appears and as much exposure as we can tastefully give them.
o All others will be thanked profusely for submitting and wished well.
o Please note: Some work, if not selected, will be made into paper airplanes or erotic origami (reserved for only the best work.)

* We consider unpublished pieces only.
o All rights revert back to the author upon publication.
o If your work is later republished, we request you note its initial publication in Camera Obscura Journal of Literature & Photography.

* Your perception of reality is your truth, so whether you interpret it or render it completely, be sure to check the alleyways and the spaces between the cushions in your sofa.

* 250 to 8,000 words. Think of these as guidelines. They are not concrete. Camera Obscura Journal will also consider an exceptional novella (12K to 30K words). Select Novella as submission type and please include a short description along with your cover.

* Bridge the Gap - Please study the gallery. $100 to the best story that takes the reader on an unexpected journey from the first image to the next. Published online in the bridge the gap gallery.

* We have no desire to lug wheelbarrows full of pulp to the recycling bin, neither are we in the business of constructing "green" buildings using paper bricks fashioned from properly formatted manuscript pages. All submissions are therefore handled electronically through our submission system.

* Simultaneous submissions are welcome as long as the piece is immediately withdrawn using the aforementioned turbo-2010, fuel-injected submission system.
